Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
