Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
